Its Snowdrop Time

Published: February 2008

Enjoy Marks Hall in early spring with our winter walk to the snowdrops self guide sheet, highlighting a variety of plants for you to enjoy at this time of year. The sheet is available from both the Kiosk and Shop counter and guides you through the Gardens and Arboretum on route to our snowdrop wood.

This lovely little piece of woodland is the home of our snowdrop carpet. It is made up of only three different varieties. Although there are some single snowdrops and a small group of galanthus Elwesii by far the largest contingent here are double snowdrops (galanthus Nivalis ?Flore Pleno?). These do not set seed and spread only from offsets. There are over 600 varieties of snowdrop but they all like moist rich soils in s semi shaded position.

So make sure you come to Marks Hall during one of these weekends:

  • Friday 8th, Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th February

  • Friday 15th, Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th February

  • Friday 22nd, Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th February
