Marks Hall at War: A Chance to Look Back

Published: January 2010
Marks Hall Gardens and Arboretum, are launching a series of special events with 'Marks Hall at War’ on Thursday 21st January.
Military Historian and Author, Mike Peters, will share his knowledge of the Glider Pilot Regiment during the time they were based at Marks Hall. The talk will be illustrated with many fascinating photographs, and there will be an opportunity for questions and sharing wartime experiences. At one time Marks Hall accommodated 3,000 British and American service personnel, using Marks Hall Mansion, as well as a wide range of huts providing accommodation, administrative offices, hospital, cinema and other necessary facilities. Most of the infrastructure of concrete roads and tracks which can still be seen date from this time.
The Gardens and Arboretum at Marks Hall include the only UK memorial to the Glider Pilot Regiment and each year on 24th March there is a service to commemorate Operation Varsity, the successful Rhine crossing. The Regiment no longer exists but as many former members as possible return to remember the very many comrades who did not return from that operation.
The talk on 21st January begins at 11.30 am and will be followed by a home cooked, two course lunch. To book please telephone 01376 563796.
