On Wednesday 17th October we held a very special tree planting. Professor Stephen Hopper, the Director of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew planted the first in a grove of Wollemi Pines, which is to become the largest planting in the United Kingdom of this rare and endangered tree.
Many of the trees are being grown indoors in pots, the largest outdoor group is only three trees. So this planting is hugely important not just visually but also as a source of information as to the tree’s habitats, its preferred growing conditions, tolerances and forms. Over twenty trees have been planted and a further major planting will follow next spring.
