Acca sellowiana

Published: July 2008
Also known as Pineapple Guava or Guavasteen, Acca sellowiana is a sub topical shrub from South America and can be seen in the Walled Garden at Marks Hall.
It is a good choice if you want something completely different because of its marvellous midsummer show of individual purple-red flowers with white edging. Growth is solid and bushy, with grey-green leaves.
The unusual flowers are edible as is the fruit which matures in autumn and is green, ellipsoid-shaped and the size of a chicken egg. It has a delicious aromatic taste, somewhat like a cross between a pineapple and a strawberry.
