Calycanthus

Is native to the moist woodlands of the south-eastern United States with its rusty red blossoms appearing throughout the Spring and Summer. The Calycanthus is known by a variety of names, all alluding to the aromatic properties of its leaves, bark, twigs and roots such as sweetshrub, Carolina allspice, strawberry shrub, pineapple shrub. This shrub can be seen beyond the Millennium Walk on route to the Memorial.
