Larix decidua

Published: April 2006
Otherwise known as the European larch, a deciduous pine tree. It was introduced into this country in the late sixteenth or early seventeenth century. The cones form the reproductive structures, both male and female growing on the same tree. The female is a rose coloured cone and the male is of a more yellowish shade, located towards the end of the branches. Pollination occurs from the middle of April to the end of May and can be seen here at Marks Hall behind the Walled Garden.
