The Marks Hall Estate Cycle Path Project

Marks Hall Estate is creating approximately 8.2km of all-weather cycle path which will link the communities of Coggeshall and Earls Colne and provide a new recreational activity for visitors to the Estate.

The free to use route will include a 2.5km loop around the outside of the Arboretum featuring new interpretation points, and will make use of the existing Second World War concrete roads, linking with the Visitor Centre and café where new cycle stands will be provided. The cycle path will be permissive (with the consent of Marks Hall Estate and Earls Colne Business Park). As part of the project we will need to hard surface more than 2km of cycle path using a granite or limestone chipping.

The cycle path will:

  • Provide a new year-round recreational activity for visitors to Marks Hall Estate, enabling them to better enjoy the landscape and natural habitats it provides for wildlife
  • Enable local people to access Marks Hall Estate more easily, and to travel between Coggeshall and Earls Colne
  • Enable those living locally and working at Earls Colne Business Park to commute to work by bike safely, relieving traffic congestion particularly along the busy B1024 Earls Colne to Coggeshall Road
  • Provide benefits for health and wellbeing
  • Encourage uptake of sustainable means of transport

Update - August 2020

We’re delighted to announce that we have recently received planning consent to go ahead with the Marks Hall Estate Cycle Path Project. We’ll be submitting our applications for funding this autumn and if all goes well we intend to start work in spring next year.
