World War II Reflections

80th ANNIVERSARY OF THE COMPLETION OF EARLS COLNE AIRFIELD – PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION

As you explore Markshall Estate, take a moment to pause and view photographs from our archives giving a snapshot of life here during WWII.

Much of the Estate was requisitioned both for the creation of Earls Colne airfield – completed in the spring of 1943 – and for the domestic accomodation of approximately 3,000 military personnel. Take a glimpse into the past and see how the estate was used, the aircraft and some of the personnel who flew from here.
