To coincide with the International Garden Photographer of the Year exhibition coming here to Marks Hall Estate (29th November 2019 – 23rd February 2020), we have launched a new photography competition to encourage visitors to the estate to capture the natural beauty of winter here in our very own Arboretum and gardens.

Open to people of all ages and abilities, with a specific category for the under 18s, we’d love our visitors to really capture the essence of Marks Hall Estate, whether it’s a wintery scene taken in our arboretum, ducks on our frozen lakes in the middle of January or the early signs of spring on our Snowdrop trail. Entry is just £1 for those under 18 and £5 for those over 18. This donation covers up to three photo entries.

We welcome entries of landscapes, wildlife or individual trees or plants, but all photos must be been taken here at Marks Hall during the competition period, and the competition is open to amateur photographers only. Photographers can submit up to three photos into the competition.

To enter please visit www.markshall.org.uk/winterphotocomp. Click on the "Donate" button to pay your entry fee, and you will receive a confirmation email containing information on how to submit your photograph to the judging panel.

Judging Process

All photographs will be judged on the following criteria:

- Originality
- Public appeal
- Suitability for inclusion as Marks Hall greetings cards, prints and postcards

The photographs will be judged through the following process:

Stage One
All entries will be assessed in the first instance by members of the Marks Hall Estate team and volunteers. From this initial process a maximum of 20 entries per category will be chosen to go forward for judging.
Stage Two
The official judging panel will then review all the entries on the long-list and select the winner for each category, along with two “Highly Commended” from each category.
Stage Three – The Public Vote
All commended and winning entries will be featured across the Marks Hall Estate social media and website. People will be asked to vote for their favourite. The overall winner will be the entry which receives the most votes in the public vote.
